Jason Plato
Dear All , Just in the process of putting the engine back in the car , got me wondering .... is there any weight benifits to be had by going through the loom and removing any unwanted wiring , plus of course tidying up the engine bay - how simple is this to do or is it a complete reconnection job ?? - there appears to be a fir bit of unused wiring carried over from the original Rover fitment . Is there such a thing as a loom specific for the K series caterham or would we have to go to a specialist loom company for a one off ??? Cheers dave
TorAtle
Of course there is a weight benefit :-) I removed about 1kg, but more importantly you can now follow the wires and do diagnostics more easily. It took me 2 evenings and halfway through you get the "oh sh*t how am I gonna get this back together" feeling!
Tony Martyr
Interesting weight saving versus work load judgement. My pilot jacket that I wore for the drive on Saturday weighs considerably more than the wires I took out of the car when I rewired the engine. I think the weight change would be within the variable band of weight ie the noise band. Volume of fuel at a given time has far more influence in terms of weigh and position Given the difficulty of the work (at least to a mechanical like me) I would not consider it as an overall benefit
CHRIS CLARK
....and how about the post-Christmas weight gain that the New Years resolution has failed to resolve (probably 'cos you didn't initiate the diet in the first place!!!).
TorAtle
Really it was a tongue-in-cheek comment. I know there's a smiley for that but can't remember the codes/macros. I re-wired to find an electrical gremlin, not to save weight.
kjp
Trying to get down to the driver/car weight limt for 1400k cars in the 750mc (600kg) makes 1kg very important, was it really that much? Where did you get the crimps to re-pin the ECU connector? I will take two nights wiring over 3weeks in the Gym any time!! PS: I am fat KenP
Jason Plato
Rather like , when erof the nearside suggested the easiest way for me to loose 10lb of useless fat was to chop my head off !!! So conclusion is , far more grief than gain ?? dave
Mick Day
I got my new crimps from those nice guys at GEMS but I'm sure that Vehicle Wiring Products (www.vehicleproducts.co.uk) or the like will have suitable ones. Mick
