4 speed gearbox on x flow

I have a 1982 short cockpit x flow in bits as a restoration project. Many bits are missing and I need to know which box would have originally been fitted to this. It has a ford live axle.

 

Can I fit a standard escort 4 speed with seperate bellhousing or should it only be the Sport box with integral bellhousing.

 

Also, which side should the starter and clutch slave cylinder be mounted?

 

Silly questions I know, but when your working completely in the dark......

I have a 1979 car (also in bits!) that is fitted with a 2821E gearbox.

This was originaly fitted to the Ford Cortina.

Caterham married this unit to a modified Triumph Herald remote assembly.

I think the 2821E was replaced with the Ford Escort Sport box with the one piece casing.

 

Try to get hold of a copy of the Tony Weale book as this covers the early gearboxes in a fair amount of detail.

The 4 speed escort boxes all had integral cast iron bellhousings. All were cable operated clutches.

 

Sport/ghia close ration box is the one to go for. Not always easy to tell, though originally they had alluminium tube (rather than a steel tube) at the back on the remote, however, reconditioned boxes came back with either.

 

Starter would be on the nearside.

 

However, if your car has provision for a hydraulic clutch, I reckon Steve is correct and you need the 3rail cortina box, hydraulic with removable bellhousing.
