Alex Wong1697456877
I've just fitted one of these modified Rover R500 ali aero style filler caps. Has anybody else had trouble with the key not always going into the keyhole? It seems that the kay can be taken out with the lock in a position where the key cant go back in. It can be sorted with a small screwdriver but it's seems a bit... well.... ummm..... crap. It is an R500 part I suppose! tongue.gif Alex
Bob Corb
Yep, I got caught out by mine at the petrol station last week. Took a fair amount of prodding and waggling to get the key to go in. I think there's a knack to turning the key fully and pulling it straight out which alleviates the symptoms. I'd rather have one with a flippy toggle ala Lotus 340R. I wouldn't even bother to lock it. I dont leave my 7 in the street very often.
I reply to every thread
Alex - I think you have to run them in. Mine was a pain in the a**e for the first month to the extent that I had to carry a small screwdriver around (as you describe) It's fine now. It maybe something to do with the seal settling down. Pierre Gillet
Is it the larger diameter type as offered by DT in their 2002 catalogue? It seems to feature a cylindrical hollow key. The smaller diameter one seems more attractive, but I am not sure about its use on an injected car. Pierre
CHRIS CLARK
I have an early type R500 type fitted (with as Pierre says, the hollow cylindrical 'key'). This used to stick and was a right cochon to unlock/lock.thumbsdown.gif It took a few weeks to settle but is fine now. I suspect it is the tightness of the sealing gland 'jamming' against the underside of the cap. After a few weeks of being squashed it is finethumbsup.gif ps. I have to admit to running a smear of grease around the seal after the first few problem days so maybe that's the cure! Good Luck
jerrypike
alex when "running in" the filler cap you need to push the cap firmly home before turning the key to squash the seal and it also helps to file the small dog-ear off the end of the key side ridge jerry

Alex Wong1697456877
I did have a beautiful proper aero cap mated to a Rover filler neck but it was so slow to fill so I gave in. Thanks for the replies. That saves me asking for another one. Alex
Pierre Gillet
End of 2000, I heard that James Whiting was playing with proper aero cap for injected cars. Does someone know if he is now offering one? Pierre
CHRIS CLARK
Pierre. I was waiting for these too (having seen the prototype work), but I think that this is now rather sidelined due to James' other work commitments, hence I now have an R500 one!!! Pierre Gillet
Thanks Chris for the info. Disappointed though. Wish you a merry Xmas! Cheers, Pierre
