Engine Re-build or replace?

Grateful for some wisdom re what's the best option.

William's 1.4K SS went crook at Croix on Thursday. Sounds like shot bearings although it could be something else. Looking for advice on options. The obvious route seems to be strip down in stages to find out what's wrong and re-build over this winter. But maybe a better route would be to source a reconditioned or good nick 2nd hand engine and swap over the special bits like the flywheel, clutch, cams and inlet plenum.

Going really radical could involve upgrading to an 1800 SS and I think I recall this could be done to the base engine.

Grateful for a poll of what folks think would be a good option. The car has the 5 speed CC box as well so I guess that could be looked at too.

Cheers!

Assuming the head is OK swapping the short engine out for an 1800 does give a big performance upgrade, the only other pieces you'll need are some cream coloured injectors

There's lots of information in the archives of this upgrade and sforshaw documented the steps required as well.

Why not go for an all alloy 2.3 litre XE motor from QED!

You only need 4.5+ grand but it is the same weight as a K series, set up for racing and will give you upto 270bhp! you may have to change the gear-box though!

Cheaper option is a rebuilt scrap XE and it will give you upto 200BHP as standard with twin 45's and 3-d ignition for approx. £2500.

Cheaper than trying to get 200bhp out of a K series and more potential later!

Low mileage Trophy 160 engine with ecu the lot from a breaker - 1100 pounds.

Only thing you'd need to do other than moving sump/flywheel etc over and fitting start motor would be to build a wiring loom to fit.

Don't forget to take absolutely EVERYTHING - the 5as unit, the lambda sensor, the lot :-)

It's what's in the 21 that he passengered in and loved and in the much lighter 7 would be a stormer :-)

Nice tough little version of the K. And good base engine for fettling at a later date.
