Petrolhead
Does anyone have the spec of the std R500 cams ie lift, duration etc etc NE7Club Web Site R5 no 65 😬 Edited by - petrolhead on 25 Oct 2005 11:57:
John Howe
You should find it on the Piper cam web site - there is a link from DVA's site. From memory it is 140thou/110thou in/ex, but check the site JH Deliveries by Saffron, the yellow 230bhp Sausage delivery machine
Petrolhead
Well I am a bit confused. Some say its the 1227 and some say the powertrain. Which is it? NE7Club Web Site R5 no 65 😬
Jason Plato
The R500 uses (used ☹️) a PTP 220 cam . Its not the same as a Piper 1227 cam. Dave
Rob Walker
It contines to puzzle me that Piper advertise their 1227 cam as the R500 cam when we know that it is not and that Piper do not supply the cams for any of the Caterham K variants. ????? Petrolhead
This was the reply I got from Powertrain: Hi Peter Although PTP supply many of the parts used in the Caterham R500 engine such as block, head, valves, etc etc the engine is built by Minister Race engines using their own camshaft specification. You can contact them on 01634 682577 Regards NE7Club Web Site R5 no 65 😬
Petrolhead
Well, it seems that the cam spec is like MI5 trade secrets and neither Minister nor Caterham will tell ☹️ Someone must know otherwise who decided that a 1227 or 1444 are better cams NE7Club Web Site R5 no 65 😬
oilyhands
When a friends R500 was refreshed the inlet cam was replaced and the replacement was named as a 1227 profile.. Oily
Jason Plato
Hmmm maybe their has been some changes along the way as suppliers and Caterham agreements have changed then ? I know that the duration and lift of a R500 cam was measured about 12 months ago and this was found to be diffrent Hmmmm Best get Scooby doo in 🤔 , if it wasnt for those pesky kids ! you could always remove what you have and get it measured to determine its origin - just a thought - if the cam is a 1227 profiles why does the R500 make its power so high up the rev range when all the home built / DVA / and others make max power at typically 7800 >8000 rpm on 1227's Dave
Mike Bees
Because of the big-bore fairly-short-primaries 4-1 exhaust, and relatively short inlets? Maybe with a bit of cam timing thrown in. Mike
Jason Plato
the inlets (rollers + small std trumpets) are very simlar in length to those of our DTHTB's (with 90mm trumpets ) . Dave
oilyhands
Both cams are retarded over our settings... Oily
mav
Piper do not supply the cams for any of the Caterham K variants They do. I have Piper Cams in my 1.6 K series Supersport - original from Caterham Edited by - mav on 25 Oct 2005 13:15:
