Alex Wong1697456877
Can anybody help? I'm trying to remove and replace the UJ's in my propshaft. I've tried pressing them out but there isn't enough room. I figure I need to get the caps to come out but can't figure out how to get enough controlled force to push them out. Any ideas? captain chaos
Alex, I gave up and took them to a local workshop. Cost £60 to have the propshaft balanced and put the new UJ's in. (I supplied the UJ's)
Alex Wong1697456877
I was hoping to be able to do this tomorrow and start putting the diff and gearbox in. Anybody know how to change the UJ? Thanks Alex Edited by - Alex Wong on 7 Dec 2001 23:21:
J.R.
Alex Use a pair of sockets in a large bench vice, one socket with O.D. slighltly smaller than the bearing cup, one with a bore slightly bigger. Oh plus a big hammer and a run up! Seriously though not difficult but fiddly, should take about 20 minutes per joint, by the 2nd one you will have it sussed. If you cant get the 2nd cup in far enough for the circlip dont press too hard as you may have dislodged one of the needle rollers. If reusing old bearings pack rollers with thickish grease to retain them
EFA
Alex, Its not difficult, just a bit fiddly. Better if there are two of you doing the job. JR's instrcutions above are exactly how I did mine after Le Mans last year.... Do you have a failed U/J - mine only failed beacuse the greese nipple unscrewed and fell out (with all the grease) - be aware however than some of the newer U'J's do not have a grease nipple - possibly for this reason. I would suggest that if it aint broke dont try fixing it! These things last forever, even with 240bhp being shoved down them! Alex Wong1697456877
I actually have new UJ's in at the mo but they don't have grease nipples. I thought it would be a good idea to change to ones with grease nipples. Thanks for all the advice. Will try it out tomorrow. Alex
C7JFM
Alex....don't do it. You know those grease nipples will only add more weight. wink.gif
