Its a big lump, I had a look a while back, I dont think it will fit a 7 (a Caterham one at least). Donkervoort use it, is their chassis significantly larger? I wonder who makes the bellhousing for them, they use the Ford type nine box which is a start. A Donkervoort held the production car lap record at the ring for a few months, 7m:15s. Donkervoorts cost a fortune

You can buy this engine with this level of power in a Grinall or Deronda too for R400 money. The Grinall will hit 170mph, thank god they fitted the extra wheel 😬, its a bit of an animal. The Deronda is fine looking machine, it appears to have sorted handling too.

I had this mail come through from Nigel Marston - posted on his behalf cos hes too tight to pay membership, and doesnt own a Seven anymore ( he will see the error of his ways *wink*)

"I’ve been looking at installing the VAG engine in an in-line application but I kept getting stalled by the following:

Sump pan

Bellhousing

Gearbox (few can handle that torque)

Dry sump

Regarding the sump pan, I understand that there might be a Passat version which is in-line and bolts straight onto this engine. I haven’t been able to verify this and have even talked with Bernard about this who doesn‘t know either.

I then started to look at a suitably strong gearbox. In the particular application I want I need a very short gearbox so a Quaife wouldn’t be much use, nor the massively cheaper T5. In fact the Quaife isn’t strong enough anyway. It came down to two boxes, one from Elite (not the one Alex Wong has installed – they do a much stronger box intended for rallying Escorts) and the DG400 one from Drenth. Both of these come with a Ford bolt pattern. In a Se7en you’d be best off using a T5 (for economic reasons), although I can’t verify just how strong it is (“plenty” I’d have thought given that it sat in the RS500).

I eventually chose the Drenth because the Elite still wasn’t short enough, and I’d spoken with the owner of Drenth who said he could probably source a suitable bellhousing from Donkervoort (who use this engine/box combo too). I just need the chassis manf to confirm they can fit the Drenth into the hole left by the (horrible) MT75 box they currently use then I’ll place an order with all the relevant people.

The only thing I haven’t resolved is a suitable dry sump for the VAG engine. I’d need someone like Pace to do all the sums. I simply haven’t a clue what’s involved. Mind you I’m not sure there’s enough room in the chassis I’m buying for an external dry sump pump yet.

Anyway, thought you might be interested. Oh BTW the VAG engine is farkin’ heavy. There *is* an alloy block VAG engine somewhere and I’ve contacts with people who will build all the internals from the 1.8T engine into the alloy block if I wanted to, but the application I’m looking to use the engine in isn’t hugely weight critical. In fact given the problems with the VAG engine I’m also looking at the old Cosworth turbo engine. It’s not much heavier than the VAG and is designed for in-line applications, so doesn’t need a dry sump.

P.S. Happy if you want to share this with BC.
