Leather seat feeding

John E

Recommended Posts

Hi John,

I use Autoglym Leather Cream and find it quite good although have never tried anything else except the odd bit shoe leather spray when I had nothing else......

Lots of specialist feeds are available from either good cobblers shops or the motoring trade, with a variety of claims......

I have found the seats to need very little treatment anyway.

Best wishes.

Andrew

John,

If they're in 'as new condition' they would probably be fed with grass :-). However, I suspect they really need (as Andrew states) Autoglym leather feed. I use this once a year and the seats stay in good condition. Don't overdo it or they become very sticky.

Regards

Phil Owen.

Yep julian they went straight in as though they were built for the car, cheque winging its way to you at this very moment.

Thanks for the suggestions on appropriate food. I dont want to spoil the seats to much but on the other hand do wish them to be happy in their new home. I have no wish to make the seats sticky (must be something mucky in there somewhere) but having them a little slippery may be worthwhile.

Please, please NEVER use saddle soap. It dries and scoures the leather. Further, it is only intended for the robust hide thickness and natural finish as in horse tack.

The best and only recommended treatment is Connolly Hide Food to be applied sparingly. My advice was gained from two sources, Rolls Royce Motors and Crowtree leathers.

I concur, my seats are made from connolly hide, and the only stuff you should put on them is connolly hide food, this is lanolin based, just like hand cream, I also use the autoglym from time to time, appears to do the job.

Got caught in a downpour in Ashbourne a few weeks ago, no tonneau on and car parked, inch of water the on seats but no penetration whatsoever.

I can reccomend Gliptone, see www.liquidleather.com, they do conditioner and cleaner, and as their site claims "Re-instates the smell of Traditional Quality Leather". Might be overpowered will the other Lotus Seven smells (oil breather fumes etc!)

I used to use the 'Connolly' hide food for my seats ('93 'S' type), but ran out recently. The shop I got it from was actually a high class furniture establishment, but when I went back there it seems they have vacated the premises. Jolly unsporting after I purchased the said food ONLY some eight years before. Dashed ungrateful what.

Have now got some 'Mer' type. It's called 'Leather Cleaner with Built-In Leather Feed'.Comes in a 250ml container.

I've yet to try it so can't really comment.

Got it direct from:- Mer Products Ltd, Whitehead House, 120 Beddington Lane, Croydon, Surrey, CR0 4TD

Thanks everyone for your suggestions. My seats inform me (we have a close relationship) that they are now full to overflowing with food and in order to avoid the risk of a severe gastric episode are now on a diet until the new year.
