Lardy
Hello all, this is my first (of many) post. My 02 plate Caterham SV (or is it FB?) Roadsport has developed a very noisy exhaust. This rattle is only heard up or down revs at around 4,500 RPM but is quite violent, it can be heard in neutral and in gear. I have checked all exhaust mounts and the headers look tight as is the protection shield (not sure what its called but the vented black piece of metal attached to the exhaust itself).......does anyone have any suggestions? Thanks in advance. Jason
Manxseven
Welcome What sort on noise is it, a rattle ? Is it like something is loose? Does it go above 4500rpm? L7 BDA Supersprint Joy here 😬
Lardy
Sounds as though the exhaust shroud itself is loose but cannot find any evidence, its a tinny sound.
Manxseven
Ah, that's probably a baffle inside the silencer come adrift. Do you know what sort of silencer it is? Can you take the ends off (repackable one) ?? L7 BDA Supersprint Joy here 😬
Normans_Ghost
Not sure what exhaust you have fitted but if you have a 4-1 collector it may be the pipe vibrating as these are just a push on fit. If so, you can tell by putting a large screwdriver between the pipe to see if it stops. If it is this, remove silencer and pipes going into 4-1 and apply silicone then refit. Myles
If it's a rattling collector (mine did/does this), you should also be able to feel gas being blown out (forward) through the gap... Mick Day
Hi, & welcome Check the plug/coil cover at the top of the engine. This can come loose & the rattle you describe etc.
