Oil for Supersprint. Which one?

Dum question I know, well, I should know the answer by now anyway. Shame on me.

What do you Supersprint boys use for oil these days? I know it had Castrol R pt in it when it was last serviced by Chris Wheeler but I'm having a bugger geting hold of any locally. Is it possible that BMW servicers would stock it over the counter? It's on their F1 car and naive as I am I can only assume they would perhaps use it in their M3/5 type beasties. Whada say chaps? If I can use something else I'd love to know what to use.

Did you really have Castrol R in it? I suspect it was RS.

Castrol RS is now 0/40 like Mobil 1. The traditional belief is that this is too thin for a x-flow although some disagree. I used to run mine on Castrol Magnatec cos I was gullable. It seemed to work fine though and I gather that my old car is still running well these days.

the important thing is not to use too thin oil.

Your engine will not like it.

Personnally I use Agip Sint 2000 10W40 API SJ specification

semi syntetic oil, and I am very happy with (no oil consumption)

For your information, the french RT (same as haynes ) advises 10W40.

Many specialists like Mobil 1 but the motorsport 15w50

and they are right because it is a very good product, full syntetic

Others will recommand you Valvoline 20w50 mineral racing oil

API SH specification (lower than API SJ but thicker)

Be careful that except the valvoline racing oil, 20w50 are usually

cheap product that you must not use in your engine.

The Castrol oil is also an excellent product.

Motul 15w50 or 15w60 le mans 300 v is also a good product

Anyway, never use a modern oil like 0w40 in your engine.

The better thing is to try for 3000 miles. In fact to be honest

as I have also an Alfa Romeo and that car likes very much the Agip Sint 2000 I use the same oil in all my car.

I like to think that semi synthetic have all the advantages of mineral and synthetic products. (but It is certainly a dream)

For your information, the Caterham is about 50000 Miles,my Alfa

90000 Miles, my VW Golf GTI One is 170000 miles and my Honda CRX

is 100000 miles and all with no engine rebuilt.

I hope this point of view will help

(gentle cold use of the engine could explain that also)
