Tom White
Have just got involved in restoring a one year old SV that got submerged in river water for about 20 Houres. Can anyone tell me what type of breather is used on a 6 speed box 🤔 I'm pretty sure that the LSD has an open breather from what I remember from building my own car, is this so 🤔 Will be busy this winter 😬 Tom
Myles
a one year old SV that got submerged in river water for about 20 Houres. Should have bought a 21 for that sort of work... The 6-speed has a breather on top of the box that may (or may not) have a plastic hose attached. Project Scope-Creep is live... Kevsta
No one else has so I'll ask...whats the story with it becoming 'submerged'?!
Leadership Team SLR No.77 Posted September 26, 2005 Leadership Team Share Posted September 26, 2005 A snorkel is possibly marginally better than a breather for that kind of use (abuse ) Stu.

Tom White
Lech Austria about four weeks ago. Seven was parked in the underground garage, 3am hotel manager wakes up the owner to tell him to move the car as the garage was filling with flood water. The manager instructed the owner to park the seven in front of the hotel on the main street which he did. The river Lech then burst its banks and filled the main street with everything possible, car is a write off, but with a lot of work can be rebuilt. I have pictures but will not show without permission. Has the gearbox breather got a one way valve? Tom
Myles
Has the gearbox breather got a one way valve? Don't know, but very much doubt it. AFAIK, it terminates in a nipple - you are supposed to run a hose from the nipple to either a breather bottle or just venting to atmosphere - no particular reason why you'd want/need a valve. Peter Carmichael
The gearbox breather is just convoluted to prevent oil splash emerging from the gearbox, but there is no valve. Tom White
OK thanks all. That means there will definitely be river water in the gearbox . The only thing thats positive is that all four wheels siezed up so the diff/gearbox will not have turned since the flood. Tom

Kevsta
Would the oil in the gearbox not have prevented the water from getting onto the gears? What with water and oil not mixing that well?! Just a thought....then agaion, you'll be taking it apart to check it all out anyway!
Tom White
Myles, OK so I'm an optimist ❗ Kevsta, it's not the water that troubles me but what is mixed in with it. The river water will wash in some fine sand, therfore I am pleased that the Gearbox/LSD has not been rotated. You are right I will be taking it apart to check. Thanks Tom
Rob Walker
Some years ago I bought a water damaged 1.6 K engine that had been submerged when a river broke its banks. It was sold to me as scrap which was fine as I only required the block. However when stripped and cleaned all the internals of the engine including the bores were perfect. Tom White
Thanks Rob I hope that I am as lucky. The engine is a VVC EU3. There is water on the dipstick so will drain/flush tonight , I won't get to the engine strip down for a month or so. Do you think it will make any difference if I throw in some multigrade in the meanwhile 🤔 Tom
Rob Walker
I would Drain the engine and gearbox and refill with some fresh oil, remove the plugs and turn over bye hand spray WD 40 down the bores. If you have time remove the back cover plate offa the diff and let the oil drain out and spray WD 40 into the diff internals. As long as the water was not sea water you should be on a winner, good luck
Sheds Moderator
Any mileage in filling the thing with a very light machine oil and using that to flush out the gunk? Might save stripping the diff and box. I'm thinking about something of 5W fork oil weight, which is very watery.
Tom White
OK thanks at all. I will carry out a preliminary flush through of gearbox and diff and have a detailed look later (car must be completely stripped down and sent to Arch for minor chassis repair/complete reskin) Tom
TimNeill
Tom, it'll make a great tale for the magazine. Take pictures and don't forget to place a small Golden Carp in the sump for that photo ...
