Xflow gearbox and diff oil

Apologies if this question has been asked to death but I didn't find the answer from the archives.

I have a type 9 5 speed 'box with s/c gears fitted to an '89 Supersprint, originally supplied by Quaife (not a full Quaife 'box I believe i.e no filler point, drain plug) - what grade / make of oil should I be filling it up with?

I've got Castrol EP90 for the Sierra diff and trunnions - will this be OK?

Thanks for the advice

EP80 should be ok with your box but I switched from this to redline shockproof lightweight. This stuff works very well and best of all, it's solid green and stays geen so is easily identifiable if it leaks! It really does cling to metal and resists throwoff and is supposed to be very slippery. Steve Perks of SPC recommended it.

EP90 for the sierra diff is ok too. I also use shockproof heavy for my diff which is bright red!

Maybe I'm just a sucker for marketing but this redline stuff has been fine in my car and I feel better for using a synthetic "race" product teeth.gif

Phil Stewart of RRT recommends Shell Spirax EP80 as a good substitute for the Ford OE gear oil for the Type 9, which is apparently no longer available.

Phil also suggested that I try it in my Quaife geared Escort Sport box, which was getting a bit 'sticky', when i asked if he could fit me in for an overhaul. The shift quality improved immediately and the box has done quite a few thousand miles since - sweet as a nut.

I'd always thought one EP oil was much like another, but obviously not. The Shell Spirax doesn't come in sexy colours but it does smell completely different to other EP's and seems less viscous, although I presume it conforms to the same SAE 80 viscosity standard as the others.

Eeh, that Crudders, he could talk a glass eye to sleep.

zzzzzzzzz.

Steve, when I consulted the Caterham build guide it indicates to use "fully synthetic gear oil" in the Sierra G/B, there must be some reason for this, the original Ford stuff (some awful red synthetic gear oil) is not available any longer, I've used Castrol Syntrax 75w/90, but it's 'orrid expensive, but does give a nice slick shift, hope this is of some assistance.

Regards Nigel.
