Steer me in the right direction please.

Check the bush that backs onto the pinion (big nut). Mark everything first so that you can adjust relative to the original position.

 

The rack must have some play. You can adjust the lock nut until it just goes tight and then back off a bit. When this is too tight, the wheel does not self centre and this is disastrous.
