Strange oil pressure behaviour on DuratecUpdate

It's only really a Raceline issue I think as their wet sump and oil filter plate are designed to use the old crossflow filter Tim, so no need to worry. 😬

The problem has only arisen because I hadn't realised the difference between 2 apparently similar filters for similar vehicles. When I bought the filter, Halfords didn't have the HOF203 for the MK 2 Escort Mexico but they did have the HOF200 which, according to their booklet, suited the MK 2 RS1600i.

Now I thought to myself, well that basically was only a X/Flow block with a Cosworth top end on it so I can't see why it shouldn't be ok and externally it looked identical as well. Alas not so *thumbdown*

Brent I don`t want worry you but are you sure the Champion filter does not have the valve ? Some of the valves are not visible from just looking down the hole as some have a flat plate with the spring behind the plate, I have cut several open to discover this. IIRC the filter that I fitted on Tom Hoods 2.3 was a Fram off an Escort Mexico 1974. This is also applicable to all K series owners the filters with this valve are to be avoided.

Sorry, yes I meant the Escort Mexico MK 1 and no, the Champion C103 doesn't have the valve. *thumbup*

And you are right again I should have left the 'i' off the RS1600. It's all these numbers and letters, they get very confusing for an old man. *wink*

I really don't think the gauge is too bad when, as you say, it is operating correctly. Mine is not very heavily damped and does appear to react pretty quickly so I hesitate to malign it at all.

Even in my old seven which I owned for seven years, I never had any problems with the oil gauge or sender. The temperature gauge sender, however, is a totally different story ☹️ *thumbdown*

Hi Brent,

My update is no update at all. I screwed up my lower back yesterday and couldn't even sit down in car. Getting old is a bitch. A trip to the pharmacy today should loosen things up to the point where I am mobile so I'll conduct a test this afternoon (Left Coast Daylight Time), come hell or, ahem, high water.

Btw, the engine was built w/ the Raceline oil filter housing. Do you have the same?

Yes Chris, I do have the Raceline oil filter housing. Did you see my post about the sump capacity and Metric/U.S. volumetric conversions 🤔

Hope your back gets better soon, you have my sympathies being a sufferer of long standing myself. (Maybe I should sit down more 😬)

I've been using a fram filter from day one...I'll check to see if it has this relief valve...I suspect it does. ☹️ What's the easiest way to open a used oil filter?

It appears that the same thing has been happening on my crossflow 🙆🏻

Symptoms have been drop off in oil pressure at higher revs, most notably when the engine and oil were fully up to temp.

Actions taken so far have included -

Changing oil and filter (which I now know is the valved type)

Changing dry sump pump *eek*

Swapping over to mechanical oil gauge.

And the worst of it all is that I have a spare 203 filter in the garage *mad*

I'll try just swapping filters over to see if that is the cure.

Don't knock all Fram filters as I have only been using Fram and have not had any problems (yet *wink*)

I expect it is the X flow version though, number PH966B. At a price under £3 doubt if it has a valve?

Glad you have solved the problem Brent

BTW Richard, my other problem as we discussed recently does appear to be improving with more miles on the car. I have now decided to leave it until next spring to see if it goes away completely.

I will keep you informed. *thumbup*

I have strange oil pressure also, bu tin a different way. By the time the oil is warm (65+) the pressure is a steady 75 up to about 5000. But above this RPM it blips up to 85, and even 90 on occasion. I was wondering if it was a stuck relief valve - are these straightforward to simply replace on the Duratec - where is it? I'm also wondering know if it might be a voltage issue, or from this thread, the filter! The car as built had a very short Fram on the RaceLine adapter to not foul the cross rail. I've since replaced with variously HOF266 and the equivalent Champion - could it be these filters have restrictive flow and increase the pressure? Both appear to have a relief valve inside. The car is a dry sumped 2.3.

I did some more research today and found out some more info:

1. the stock duratec filter has a oil pressure relief valve in it with an 8-11 PSI opening pressure.

2. the filter I have been using, Fram PH3614, has an oil pressure relief valve with the same operating range.

3. I found a replacement filter, WIX 51034, does not have this valve. It does have the same flow rate and is 4.5" in height.

I'm changing my oil tonight and will try out the WIX filter and see how it affects my oil pressure.

Why does Raceline recommend not using filters with this oil pressure relief valve? The stock filter has it...? *confused* 🤔

BTW Richard, the Fram filter you are using also has a relief valve.

Oil is now changed along with a new filter that does not have the pressure relief valve in it (see the Wix number in the previous post for the exact part number). The oil pressure is certianly higher while warming up and at idle. It seems to be around 4 bar when running at RPM's. 😬 😬 😬

Cheers,

That's the number of the filter I've been using.

My update: it seems that, umm, ahem, adding the correct amount of oil as per the manufacturer's reccomendation (not the dealer's, ahem again) has cured my ills, w/ the PH966B in place. There's this certain sequence of corners hereabouts where any oil pickup issues are quickly revealed. Several runs through showed no problems. Several more runs through were made just to be sure. 😬

The back is better too *thumbup*
