K SERIES OIL PRESURE

My 1.6kss oil presuure seems to have dropped slowly over the last couple of years. It's now at the point whereby it reads 3.5bar cold idle, 2-2.5bar warm with revs, and only 1bar warm idle. The engine runs and sounds as good as ever. How do I know if the big ends are wearing? (assume this is the main reason for low pressure assuming the obvious things are o.k), what happens when it let goes?, should I be getting it in for a check over (how and what do you check?). If the bearings or intenrals need replacing, what sort of cost am i looking at for the engine rebuild and is it a good time to get into the upgrade business?

Lots of questions I know, will wait eagerly for the repsonses.
