"Rivnuts" and exhaust bolt spec

Big Brother

Recommended Posts

Just started my Winter Stripdown/rebuild.

I have a coulpe of minor probs that could do with the advice of fellow Blat Chatters so here goes....

I have a Rivnut that is loose and spins. I have managed to remove the wing but what can I do with the spinning Rivnut? Can it be "fixed" or does it need to be replaced. If so, where can I get a replacement from and what sort of price am I looking at (tools etc)

Also

My exhaust was bolted to the rear wing when I bought the car. When I refit it I intend to bolt it to the "normal" location just in front of the wheelarch.

Does anybody know what size bolt is used (thread and length)

TIA for all replies

Steve

A rivnut gun is about £20, about the same as a good rivet gun, you need to replace the one thats spinning, not easy as it will spin as you try to drill it out.

If you have a rivnut gun you may be able to pinch tight the loose one.

Demon Tweeks do a rivnut gun plus assorted size rivnuts for £46.35 (plus vat) on page 267 of the 2001 catalogue (which is about £20 cheaper than a similar looking one in my Sealey catalogue).

You can probably hold the rivnut in place with mole grips while you undo the screw that is in it, this is what I've done when faced with loose ones. May not be worth replacing as you don't often remove the wings (well, I certainly don't).

Can't help you with the exhaust bolt, I won't be seeing the inside of the garage this weekend.

Thanks all,

Paul, I will give it a try tomorrow and if unsuccessful I will try the Superglue method (Tin man)

If all else fails I will replace it with a nut and bolt (Will be a pain as bolt wil be behind the inner skin)

Any Ideas on the exhaust bolt?....

Thanks for the offer Arn,

I may well take you up on it in a couple of weeks (or months...depending on how the rebuild goes)

Am I right in thinking that the "rivnut" tool works along the same lines as a pop rivet gun?

Also do you know who sells the "rubber bung" type fixings?

Steve, whereabouts are you located ?

A Rivnut gun works similar to a 'normal' rivet one: threaded stud screws into rivnut (= threaded 'hat'-shaped spacer/tuby thing), threaded portion is usually pulled into the tool, resting the horizontal washer-type surface against the tool, the shaft further shortens and therefore 'rivets' = squashes the rivnut's body.

Check here for a drawing:

For small quantity samples contact me via e-mail.

Best regards - Karsten

Rivnuts are a pain in the A**e. I have removed them all from my car and replaced them with nuts and bolts. The ones which would be behind the inner skin I've used a longer bolt and extended through the skin into the open air, so the rear wings can be removed/replaced without drilling out the rivets.
