Flywheel and engine charging

Morning,

 

A couple of questions.

 

1) My ammeter all of a sudden has started to show plus two with the lights one, it normally sits just above zero. What should it be ideally? (I feel dumb asking this but does the positive mean that it is charging well or not, it increases when I put the lights on so is the gauge reading the opposite way?)

 

2) Whilst looking under the car last night (bodging sump so it can go to the garage today) I noticed that the plate/bellhousing covering the fly wheel has a hole in it (starter motor point I think) and leaves some of the fly whell exposed, is this ok or should I have this covered.

Flywheel showing is OK. Just don't drop a stray bolt down the hole. Don't know about the ammeter 'cos they aren't standard fitment.
