Found: Coventry Climax Engine.

Here's a thing : a friend has unearthed a Coventry Climax fire pump engine that works a treat and is complete in it's frame. What should I ask him to look for as the type that is suitable for car conversion?

Apparently there are certain casting features that identify this. Any clues?

Oh, and how much should I expect it to be worth? (Note: I didn't say how much should I pay? 😳)

I nearly bought an LPP a week or two ago for £250. It had the smaller Climax engine. There's a bigger version that looks the same, only bigger and twice as heavy (The complete pump unit that is)

There's more where that came from an all.

Another thing ; They are designed to go to the rev limiter immediately in starting. Don't know if this is a feature of the engine or the way it's built for Fire Pump use. I used to bollock my crew for screaming the tits off them; "You wouldn't do that to a Ford Escort !! Why do it to my fire pump ??" then I found out the truth.

It'd be fun just to keep in the shed for sunny afternoon 'water' games even if it wasn't the car spec version 😳

Still keen to know more *thumbup*

Some of the pump engines are a bit small for a 7. What sort of oil system does it have?

I can put you in touch with the chairman of the Lotus 7 club of Sweden if need be. He knows all about them. I bought one for him, as his agent over here, back in 1998 and shipped it over to him for his then engineless Series 1.
