MOT Failure

I hope this helps....

For emissions purposes only, kit cars and amateur built vehicles first used before 1 August 1998 and ****el rotary-engined vehicles first used before 1 August 1987 are to be considered first used before 1 August 1975. Kit cars and amateur built vehicles first used on or after

1 August 1998 ("S" reg) are required to obtain Single Vehicle Approval and should be tested to the limits stated on the registration document.

So, when did you first use it?

That's interesting...so a 1996 home-built 7 shouldn't need an emissions test? My car has passed the test before on this basis, but the tester always told me he was using a "relaxed" interpretation of the rules.

It's not pink, it's medium red violet... 😬

Peter,

There are bush/washer/seal kits available to rebuild a trunnion. Try REDLINE or JAMES WHITING.

Concur with everyone regarding your emissions - your car should be exempt.

Thanks guys .... seems the new computerised system tells them what to do and it told them to test emmissions !!

I will fit a new trunion from James Whiting ... though I really dont think there is excesive wear ...

I will ask them to look i the boook to see if the system has it wrong ... re emissions

the lad who did it said they could adjust the carburettors in order to make it pass then put it back as it was if it doesnt run too well !!! *eek*

what a load of ..........

I am hoping to see my friend who owns an MOT garage in the next couple of weeks I will find out exactly how it works as he has just dobbed out for all the equipment that is now required, and last time I saw him was moaning loudly about it. *wink*

Is it a kit built car or a factory built car? Presumably it's pre 1998.

If it is kit built then visible smoke test only is required.

If factory built than it will have to pass an emissions test applicable to that engine.

Looking at your pictures, it's on a Q plate so must be kit built therefore you do not need to pass an emissions test.

Details on emissions tests here and here. The flowchart to determine which test is required is here - note the small box on the bottom right of the page which has the kit car information in it.

Peter: although the testers have read the book, they are not always good at understanding it correctly.

I suggest either: you print out the MOT guide from 7FAQ and argue the case

OR: (much easier) go to one of the local Seven specialists (I recomend and go to Ratrace in Barnet and they have an understanding and sympathetic MOT tester who gets the correct interpretation.

DON'T be bullied by someone who appears not to know a Caterham Seven from an Austin Seven!

Trunnions wear on the threaded part and the bushes. You can sometimes get away with replacing only the "top hat" bushes but the whole thing is not dear.

Make sure you lubricate them often. EP90 gear oil is the recommended lube but grease works too. If you don't renew these either the oil leaks out or the grease goes hard, either way the thing wears out prematurely. When I had an old Spitfire I used both (alternate fills) and when one eventually wore out I had a lovely gloopy mixture in the thing. Sadly by the time anyone does any sensible maintenance on these things the wear is already there.

The lad is quite correct.

When I was in Sweden at MOT time I had to lean out the idle screws to bring it down from 5% to ~3.5%. 3.5% is the requirement for all cars of that age including kit cars.

This was all done with the sensor connected and in a few secs. Count the number of half turns in needed, give a bit more tick over if necessary.

Once clear of the station I put it all back as it was and carried on. It would not progress nicely at all at 3.5%.

it's best to tune the carb by ear anyway to changing the setting a little is no hardship really.

  • 4 weeks later...
  • 2 months later...

Mine failed its MOT on emission and lack of number plate light (light easily solved by temp. light velcro'd on and wired into fuel pump feed 😳).... but emmissions not so easy. *thumbdown*

Many thanks to Steve Foster who pointed me in the direction of this thread, and for Shaun_E for posting the flow chart link, very useful indeed. *thumbup* *thumbup*

A tel. call to MOT station pointing out the 'K' in my chassis No. and what it means. Followed by, "I'll call you back after I've spoken to VOSA". Few hours later, "yes sir, sorry, drop back in and we'll sort it out. Hey presto a new pass certificate in my hand.

Thanks again. *cool*

I had to find a new MOT man last week as I needed my sensible 1989 Lancia Integrale rather quickly - the only time it was out of my sight was when he went up the road for the brake check (wouldn't let them stick it on the rollers due to the 4WD) - he came back and wrote me a ticket out . . . never saw the emisions computer switched on, never mind the probe inserted up one of the exhausts . . .
