SvenDriver
I've bled the brakes a couple of times now (complete flush in fact) and pumped the hand-brake whilst doing the rears. Now the pedal has about 1" of movement which feels just like spring resistance and then I am stomping on a brick . So I am wondering if maybe it is the brake master cylinder adjustment bar which is set wrongly? Am I mad?

Myles
If you think the pedal is in the wrong position for you (too high, too low), it's an easy adjustment assuming you've got the standard or uprated MC - pop the pedal box cover off, remove the pin from the MC->pedal pivot, loosen the locknut and rotate the whole pivot assembly (you can usually rotate just the MC threaded rod, but it's easier the other way). Try just a single or double rotation at first - it might not look like you've changed much, but it makes a relatively-large change at the far end of the pedal... If it's some other kind of problem, please explain! Project Scope-Creep is live... SvenDriver
I've forgotten what 'normal' is and cannot remember how much play was in the pedal initially. It comes from switching between tin-top and 7 - it has befuddled me methinks.
