Expansion Tank Lid

I think I've lost part of my expansion tank lid during last service?

The cap used to consist of two parts : A plastic disc fixed to a metal spring, and a plastic lid which was pushed down on top of this spring and screwed down.

I now just seem to have a plastic lid, no plastic disc with metal spring.

Is this important, does the metal spring act as some kind of safty release it the pressure becomes to high?

I can't tell if they've just fitted a different lid, or have lost the sprung washer part of the lid?

Are you sure the sure the spring and cap are not now fixed inside the lid as they should be?

They do have a tendancy to come apart and would get replaced at service time.

If the innards are missing you will get coolent pouring from the expansion tank once the stat opens.

Spoke to factory, Expansion lid was replaced at service.

However there is engine coolant residue around the engine bay and I've lost a couple of inches from the expansion tank so they're going to send a new lid.

How can I check the thermostate?

Am I right in thinking that when cold, water should only flow through the expansion tank, and when about 85 degrees c is reached the thermostate should start to open and water flow throuh the radiator?

The fan should then start at about 95 degrees c.
