2.0 Zetec Engine (U.K. vs U.S.)

I have purchased a 2.0 Zetec engine out of a 2000 Ford Focus here in the U.S.A. In checking the various aftermarket products in the U.K. I am concerned if the products will work and or bolt on the U.S. version of the Zetec engine. The two areas I am looking are Multi-port fuel injection kit and Weber type carburation (45DCOE)with manifold and electronics kit. I would like to strike up a dialogue with someone who can help.

The Ford engines are similar both sides of the pond.

 

However, the Focus engine is different from the Mondeo and Escort engines.

 

The first problem is that the water pump runs the wrong way so you will need and idler pulley system from Raceline or and electric water pump.

 

There is not a lot of bits around in terms of fuel injection for these engines, soyou are limited to probably Raceline or Dunnell

Although there are detail differences between the european and US Zetec engines they are mainly detail changes. A lot of the differences are to do with the fuel system, therefore if you are junking the std inlet and fitting an aftermarket system you wont have a problem. The inlet inlet manifold mating face is the same I think. I will double check. The ports and valves are slightly different. Does you engine have VCT on the exhaust cam?? Euro ones don't. This would be your only problem as most budget aftermarket ECU's wont be able to drive it and you cant fit a std exh cam. The word VCT will be embossed on the cam cover if you have it.

 

There is a tapping on the side of the block below the inlet manifold which is different to but that shouldn't matter. Its right down near the ladder frame I think the US engine has two holes, the EU has one and a boss. The crank position sensor is in the same place. So aftermarket Euro injection systems should work just as well.

I am in the US and did the Zetec conversion. The VCT motor will not work. I think you need to go with the Ford Contour or Mercury Mystique engines 1997 if I am not mistaken. I think there are some differences with the new Focus Zetec. Check Eslinger Motorsports Website. They may be of help. I used Raceline components and was quite pleased with the fit and finish. More costly than the others but worth it. If on a budget try James Whiting. Hope I was of help.

I'm told that the UK zetecs have a hydraulic valve arrangement and the US does not. This can cause a problem fitting cams designed for a UK motor. Esslinger is currently working on such a problem for my car. The jenvey/lumention throttle body setup goes on a US motor easily. A company called TWM in Goleta, CA. (near Santa Barbara) also makes a throttle body for that motor.I hope this helps. yankeedoodoo

Zetecs (YC) come with both hydraulic and solid followers in the UK, earlier engines are generally hydraulic. Both Kent and Piper can cut profiles for either. The followers are very small in diameter however and can usefully be increased by using YB or Rover K followers with the bores enlarged to suit. There a couple or three different head castings depending on capacity but I understand all 2 litre heads are excahngeable.

There are lots of US based Zetec tuners (I think www.focaljet.com is very good source of info on the Focus Zetec engine). In NY, there's Unorthodox Racing and in CA, there's Esslinger Engineering. Just to note - Caterham USA uses VCT equipped Zetec engines from Contours where you need to meet emissions. VCT avoids the need to fit an EGR. Otherwise, they will build just about anything - you could always give them a try? They are based in Colorado.
