Bricol
Does anyone know if Ford produced 4 or 5 sped gearboxes with different 1st gear ratios? I'm after the lowest possible first and maybe second gear - all to do with crawlig along at walking pace, but needing the engine up and revving at a decent rate to provide sufficient power. Already going for low ratio diff. Bri
Steve Kirk
There are definitely 2 sets of 5 speed ratios - the 2.0 and V6 variants, with the 2.0 being lower ratios. ISTR ratios 1,2,3,5 were all different between the two sets - 4th is of course 1:1 in both. However the 1st in the 2.0 variant is useless IMHO, and the 1st in the V6 is not really that great either. Are you sure you want the very low first? I once fitted a V6 box to my XF car to replace the 4sp, thinking it would improve it, but it was a backwards step, the 1-2 change in particular was nowhere near right. I think there are more than one set of 4 sp ratios too but I know less about that. If you want to change just your first ratio, speak to the specialists. SPC, BGH, Road&Race seem to be the most recommended in this field. I have a SPC CR box and it's a gem IMHO.
Bricol
Yep - definietely want a very low first / maybe second. Use the car in trialling and having increased ground clearance with big wheels and tall tyres, it won't pull first at just over tick over any more. Going lower on diff ratio soon but overall lower ratio would be good. Bri
