Westfield
I am about to refresh the 1700 Xflow engine in my car which has done about 15,000 mile since a rebuild in 1990. Its now burning oil and fuming from the breather, the oil pressure however is fine and the engine goes like a dream. Before I get stuck in can someone give me some advice on the following. What would you replace in the engine as a matter of course while it was down. (aside from new pistons and gaskets and anything that is obviously worn) The car has a 4 speed box, is it worth replacing it with a 5 speed while its out? If so whats involved in terms of parts required to support the change? Also does gear lever end up in the same place? If the answer is to stick with the 4 speed I want to replace some seals while its out. How can I identify if its a Bullet 2000E type box or a Rocket 4 speed to order the correct parts. Confession time its in a W*******d! Many Thanks Tony Edited by - Tony L on 4 Nov 2001 10:32:50 Edited by - Tony L on 4 Nov 2001 10:33:
Roger King
Big end bolts, timing chain, valve springs, crank seals, valve stem seals, possibly valves, etc. DO spend the extra and use forged pistons. If you don't, you'll be in exactly the same position again in another 15,000miles. Besides, you'll see a power gain with forgings.
philwaters
Re: Gearbox, Whether it is worth it depends on the driving you do and if you feel you need a 5th, overdrive, gear. You could go for an SPC C/R - depends on your budget. As for parts required, I think you will basically need the following: 5 speed gearbox - shock horror! 5 speed bellhousing - either caterham cast iron or source an RS2000 alloy one Clutch release arm to suit bellhousing Clutch release bearing 30mm Alloy spacer that goes between the g/box and the bellhousing Speedo drive unit and gear Are the number of splines differenct on 4 and 5 speed ? Different clutch? I am sure there are a few other bits as well, not sure, but that is a start to get a few prices together on.
