Pete
This might seem a silly query but I can't get my head round the reasoning. Why do we add extra pressure to road tyres for track use? It seems to me that overinflation reduces the contact area on the ground and hence grip. Also, if the side walls are stiffer as a result of extra pressure, surely the tyre flexes less on cornering and again grip might be lost. Anyone know the answer? R2D2
I think it is all to do with keeping the tread area flat and the higher pressures help. The pressure recommended by manufacturers must be a compromise to suit grip, noise, ride quality and mileage so they are not optimised for track use. I have never tried increasing type pressues on my seven by on a Mk 1 Escort using A021Rs I use 36 front and 32 rear (26 recommended by Ford). The grip is great the wear rate poor.
