Adam
Managed to get a nice "tear" in my CF nose. Given the cost of a new one, Id like to try to patch-up the damage. I was gonna use some glass fibre body repair kit from Halfords ... just throught Id ask if anyone has tips/better ideas before I start. EFA
Adam, There is no way to repair it. Glassfibre will not adhere to the carbon. AMMO
Adam Whilst having a tidy up I found some carbon fibre matting. Not a large quantity but enough to do a localised repair. Email me your address and I'll send it to you. AMMO
Mike Bees
Achieving an invisible repair is going to be nigh-on impossible if it's unpainted. If you use the right resin then getting a strong repair isn't an issue, plenty of carbon fibre boats & masts get repaired - they're too expensive to scrap. EFA
"If you use the right resin then getting a strong repair isn't an issue" Have to argue here Mike, it'll always split apart, because the original resin was prepreg. Rigid parts can be fixed together with special epoxy resins, but even then the joint is the weak part. Adam
The nose is un-painted, so this little battle scar will always be visible. I still hope to be able to repair it though - nothing to lose, and ££££ to save.
EFA
Adam, Take it to a CF laminator. Where are you based and I'll see if I can point youtowards a local company. Mike Bees
Boats & their spars are made from pre-preg these days, and they do get repaired to be as strong or stronger than the original, so it is possible. Either way one wouldn't expect a Caterham nosecone to be under too much stress. Mike

rynicolson
Adam, sorry about the late posting... been away, I used to be involved building hi tech racing yachts in my previous life, couple of outfits in the SW can deal with your problem, though its a small job if you e.mail me off line I'll send some suggerstions, probably Green Marine in Lymington are the best.
