jackb_ms
I believe my VVC is running a bit rich. You can smell it while I'm idling or reversing. What are the risk apart from burning more fuel? Jack Emily, The Very Yellow
blade_runner
I have been told it wears the bore's quicker... 'Pinky Pics' here
Tigger
Petrol washes the cylinders of oil deposits and promotes accelerated wear. :(
owelly
It also causes a cooler burn in the chamber so maybe alter the heat of the plugs. its only a game......... http://daftlardycars.mysite.wanadoo-members.co.uk/ http://www.locostbuilders.co.uk/photos.php?action=gal&user=owelly
blade_runner
Also shortens the life of silencer material in the exhaust, but the flames look fantastic! 'Pinky Pics' here
Chelspeed
I think slightly rich is "safe" in that when it's lean it burns hotter. So you generally tune an engine to run slightly rich so you have more margin before it goes lean and risks causing damage by overheating. If it's very, very rich then there's a risk of bore washing and damage that way. But on average slighty rich is best.
henry21p
jack - you've just removed your cat the same as me - from what i understand, this smell is not unexpected. mine does the same with exactly the same setup.
turbo7
I would rather be slightly rich than lean, if you run it rich the car will run cooler, lean means hot and thats not good, my power map chucks fuel in, lamba still shows green on full throttle. Bore wash can occur but you have to be chucking it in and not using the fuel. Plenty of throttle will see it okay. My safe maps are thoes that slightly over fuel
jackb_ms
Cheers Dave, That's cool then 😬, It's mainly when I reverse or when it's idle that i can smell it. I don't know what happen when i'm blatting along because no one is following me If I ask a nice Rover garage with the right software would he be able to see what is going on? My setup is a standard VVC witha sligthly modified fuel pressure regulator, to stop the hesitation at lower RPM Jack Emily, The Very Yellow
Rob Walker
Fit the correct fuel OE pressure reg and correct mixture should restored. If you have increased the fuel pressure than your entire map may be out.
Myles
If you run into any misfires or other rough-running, check the plugs - they can soot-up when running rich. Project Scope-Creep is live...
