Starter Motor Problems - SOLVED

*mad*Ive just replaced the starter motor solenoid with a new one from Brise (£50) and tried to start the car this morning and the same sodding click *mad*

I have the replacement relay fitted and I have replaced the 27amp wire to the spade connection on the starter solenoid and now the solenoid but nothing.

I suppose its another arm wrenching/twisting 1/2 hour removing it. This time I will take it to a local dealer and get it tested.

The only other thing that has changed is the fitting of a lightened fly wheel. Could there be an issue anout the ring gear teeth and the pinion on the starter not being a match and therefore binding???

Any views would be very welcome

short the +ve terminal of the battery with the +ve terminal of your solenoid , if this doesnt engage the solenoid then the issue is with the solenoid itself .

What starter motor are your using - has it worked and engaged with the flywheel previously ?

Its a Brise gear reduction type based on a Magnatron. Pics on the link below.

I've refitted the existing solenoid and had it tested at an auto electrical specialist who said that it was operating normally. I cant think of what else to do!

Is your battery up to the job, i.e. holding a full charge etc - I had a similar problem - thought it was the starter, turned out the battery was supplying just enough to kick the engine over under perfect conditions..cold or damp and it couldn't do the job. All fine now after sorting the battery.

OK it seems to be fixed. Thanks for the posts.

I checked the battery voltage and found this OK at 12.79v standing

I then started to check for bad connections and low and behold the remote relay that I fitted to help overcome the starting problems had a badly crimped spade connector on the earth. Refitted with a new one using the Governor of California type grip on the pliers. Checked and Wahay ….. starts perfectly now! *thumbup*

Thankfully Brise have said that they will take back the other solenoid that I haven’t used *thumbup*
