Why is it bad to bump start a fuel injected car?

I don't think it's a bad thing, it just doesn't work. If the battery's flat, the fuel pump won't run. You get no fuel pressure to the injectors.

If you have a clapped out ringgear or starter then bump starting will work.

I'm sure most modern cats would survive a bump start - they are not as fragile as once they were.

Bob's right about needing some battery life to power the ECU and fuel pump etc.

I've bump started my Se7en after the starter solenoid wire broke...

As long as the engine *starts*...

What's the difference from the starter motor cranking the flywheel to the gearbox cranking?

Not much...

The problem is if fuel is supplied but doesn't fire.

With regards to the ECU requiring power to run, that's true, but not even close to as much as the starter, hence would it often be possible (and not a problem to) jump start an injected car.

Catalytics are Surprisingly Tough..

One can even run Leaded fuel (a few tankfulls even) through one with no long term ill effects.

A bit of Raw fuel.. 'dumped in' sporadically will not hurt it in the least.

There are more than a few "old wives tales" re Catalytics still lurking about apparently
