asbp
R500 Exhaust I never thought that I would say this words , but the trued is that I fitted a R500 complete exhaust (4 in to 1) to a VVC roadsport, and it is a bit to loud for the road, I am stopped by the police 2 to 3 times every time I take the car out for a spin 😬, I love the way the manifold comes out in the side but is there any silencer from Caterham that will bring the noise done a bit? But sit locking the part? PS what tyre pressure are people using Thanks
Petrolhead
They do a longer/bigger silencer which I believe is the std fit on a SV Give them a bell R5 no 65 😬
SteveP
Not cheap though - perhaps look at a nice titanium unit from Raceco as an alternative? Tyre pressures for the road - 18psi all round on CR500s  SteveP The Caterham Pages here

Jason Plato
Dont go and spend a fortune on silencers etc - simply repack your present silencer and try that first .  My R500 silencer is 98Db .  C7 TOP Powered by Hellier Performance 😬 South Wales AO
Petrolhead
So is it just a case of putting more packing in? R5 no 65 😬
Jason Plato
Sometimes it can be simply a case that the packing has burnt out and the silencing effect has reduced . Packing material is available from motorsport specialists - try and get some "basalt" stuff . I found this to be quite long lasting . There was a story that Caterhams own silencing material was quite expensive , I wouldnt pay any more than £30 for enough material to pack the R4/500 exhaust 3-4 times . When repacking though , be carefull not to put too much in . If you ram it all in then the absorbancy effect is reduced and it will still be loud as **** , since the sound waves effectivly pass straight through . You need just enough - its hard to describe in words .  I "just fill it" , rather than "ram it in" with a cut down broomhandle .  Dave  C7 TOP Powered by Hellier Performance 😬 South Wales AO  Edited by - Dave Jackson on 9 Apr 2005 18:02:
321freeflow
Don't use Basalt fibre, it's crap. Burns away far too easily. Wrap the perforated core tube in Stainless wire wool (loosely). Then wrap again with cling film, this keeps the wire wool in place and makes the next task a whole lot easier. Pack the silencer with 'E' glass fibre. If you can't remove the core tube to do the above, then your silencer is badly designed.

321freeflow
Guinea pig car? Would like a definitive noise test done on a Caterham with my new silencer, yes. Don't have to prove the design works - it does! Will be at Ricky Gaulds tomorrow, so mobile signal is p*sh but yeh, please call me any time Monday. Cheers. Petrolhead
So whats thr procedure for repacking a R5 exhaust R5 no 65 😬
321freeflow
Absolutely no idea! If you can only remove one end-cap then try this: Fab up a cardboard tube that will slip over the perf core tube, then wrap the stainless wire wool (loosely) around the cardboard, follow this with a good few layers of cling film. Slide the cardboard tube down over the perf and using a twisting, screwing action ease it out leaving the wire wool wrapped around the core. If you can reach, use masking tape or equivalent to tape the end of the cling film/wire wool wrap to the perf. Now, use 'E' glass fibre (long strand - it'll stay in longer, aided of course by the stainless wire wool) to pack the can. It's difficult to quantify but pack it tight without ramming it 😳 The cling film and masking tape will burn off when you fire up so don't worry about the smoke.
