andy oliver
Rover tell me the GFE 26 filter has been replaced by the GFE 280 .Is this the same filter with a new part number or is it a different one that's as good?
Allen Payne
I don't know if it any better or worse than the other one but I know they fit and work on my car. Regards Allen
Mike Bees
GFE280 is 'standard', GFE26 is 'premium'. I was told that the 26 is a better (finer) filter. Mike
V7 SLR
I've been using the 280 for the last 13K miles. As Mike says, the 26 should be exactly the same but with smaller filtration. If it's not available any more, the 280's good enough. Both have the one-way valve.
andy oliver
Thanks for the info guys.I was only able to get the 280 from my local Rover dealer (Crawley Down Rover).I would be interested to know if the finer 26 is available elsewhere. Cheers.
Allen Payne
Andy, Try your local Unipart motor factors - they should be in the Yellow Pages. Regards Allen
V7 SLR
Don't try Halfords. I went out at lunchtime but they only do their own and Champion filters.
CHRIS CLARK
I have a '280' fitted at present, but Caterham used to use the '171' (?) What's the difference?
andy oliver
I compared a 171 with a 280 and the 171 doesn't seem to have the anti drain back valve.
CHRIS CLARK
Advantage/disadvantage ?
Blatman
The anti drain back valve will stop the filter emptying itself, thus ensuring that it doesn't have to be re-filled at start up time, so depriving your main bearings of precious gold liquid for a little longer while oil is pumped to fill the filter.....
