FH
Flares, flares, flares teeth.gif sorreeee Chris. The car is all mahogany wood veneer Quote If you've ever wondered what wooden boat builders do with their time off, here's the answer. Yacht builder Sean McMillan crafted this one-off Spirit 7 as he calls it, over six years and 1,000 hours in his spare time. Completed earlier this year, he recently drove it 200 miles - mostly on trunk roads - to Southampton Boat Show, where it created a sensation. Within hours of the show's opening on September 14 he had sold it to a wooden furniture manufacturer, who stumped up £15,000. You'd be barking up the wrong tree if you thought that the Spirit 7 was simply a Caterham 7 clothed in wood. Sean, fifty, built it from scratch, fabricating a box-steel chassis with a Ford 1600cc engine and running gear. The wooden body is mahogany veneer laminated to western red cedar. Just about the only Caterham component is the screen. "I used the Caterham windscreen to provide a guide for the scuttle shape," says Sean, who reckons the fully road-legal car is only 20kg heavier than a Caterham 7. "With today's high-tech epoxy systems, wood structures can be both strong and light. I'd rather have a crash in my car than a lot of others I could mention". (Why have the crash n the first place says I) blush.gif BTW, we believe someone called Gavin Green is the lucky man smile.gif
CHRIS CLARK
I'd like to see a picture of that car. Six years work and 1000 hours of spare time ? Not that good a return for the hours and money is it; and I want to know what the h.ll is spare time anyway!!!
