John E
this is rather a basic question but as i'm going on a track day tomorrow thought it worth asking. i have always checked my engine oil level when the engine is cold and all/most of the oil has drained back into the sump. is this correct or should the engine be turned over but not necessarily started in order to re prime the pump etc and then check the level. sparkey
Hi John, I always check mine cold and have never had any problems on track days. I usually let it drop a bit below max as well as crossflows can push a reasonable bit out when full and at max revs constantly, and my catch tank is in a very awkward position to empty. Enjoy your day out. Sparkey
Dave H
I don't think it matters if the engine is hot or cold, but I've always made sure it's been stopped for a couple of minutes to let the oil settle back into the sump. Make sure its full (up to the max) and you should be fine. You need to be sure the pickup will be in oil at all times - watch your oil pressure and back off on long fast corners if it starts to drop. Enjoy your day and don't get paranoid about it - the crossflow is a remarkably tough engine and will put up with a lot of abuse before it breaks.
