Leadership Team SLR No.77 Posted March 23, 2005 Leadership Team Share Posted March 23, 2005 I did a slight mod on Dave Andrews mod some years ago. Instead of using oversize nuts as the spacers, I cut some spacers out of 2.5mm aluminium plate. I worked out the shape by taking a "rubbing" of the opening in the gearbox, then just carefully handmade some. If I recall I used 2 spacers. Oddly enough the gearchange was much smoother after the mod than previously - suggesting that the position of the ball on the gearlever shaft was originally not optimum? Stu. oldbutnotslow
Just modified the gear leaver as per DA's instructions and as a first fit and I reckon that the throw has been reduced to 3.65 inches give or take the odd 6"! Slightly more than the calculated figure of 3.4 but this could be down to the very inaccurate way I have measured it. I need to remove again and as DA indicates cut off 5mm from the rubber spring. (Hopefully I can then get reverse!!) I always seem to end up with measurements mixed in MM and inches 😬 Grant Black and stone chip and currently not going ☹️ but waiting to me made better courtesy of Dr. Dave Andrews. oldbutnotslow
I think so Angus and it is very simple to do. I will refit tomorrow after cutting the rubber spring down. I have to say that I am not keen on the gap that is created and as such I have been building up a silicone sealant bead between the three nuts. The intent is to take it just proud of the nuts so that it fits flush when bolted down. Feels very slick I have to say. xflow7
Do all the shift levers have the rubber "spring"? I can't recall there being one on mine, but perhaps I'm mistaken. For clarification we're talking about the lever as supplied for fittment to the Type 9 right? Dave
philwaters
Yes Dave, that is right. It doesn't look much like a spring, more of a huge rubber gaiter/seal... it looks like a number of ribbs, each one slightly bigger than the one below. Have a look at the pictures on my previous link. Nigel Riches
Dave, if you have a standard Ford type 9, or Escort gearlever there should be a fluted conical rubber affair on the lower end of the stick, it will be retained in place with a circlip and washer, holding it in compression, this allows you to push down on the stick to pass the reverse lockout, and when unloaded it returns to the regular height, hope this has clarified what you're looking for. 1982. 5 speed, clamshells. oldbutnotslow
All back together now and feels good. The ball was quite dry when I took the lever off with no grease apparent. Just greasing it up has made the movement much smoother. The silicone sealant seals the gap created by the spacer nuts and has the added benefit of retaining them in place whilst you refit. Seehere All told mine was in and out 3 just times I recon this has to be a worthwhile mod and as I had all the nuts and bolts in stock it has cost me nothing. I am not able to road test it as I don’t have an engine at the moment. Its with Dr Dave who keeps finding more problems with it!
