Right , time to get serious

Delbert

Recommended Posts

After faffing about in the middle of nowhere with no lights and a very helpful shedder on the other end of the phone I have decided that whilst the white Armani suit method of car maintainence might be the preferable method I might have to get some spares and um er those turney things , ah yes tools.

So far I carry spare ciggerettes, lighter, Indegestion tablets and a spare hat.

None of these prooved usefull in the middle of nowhere.

Jack was in the back as is a can of oil.

What else should I carry 🤔

Fuses, a TORCH, some electrical and (preferably) gaffer-tape, a multi-tool (Leatherman type thing) and then expand to fit your paranoia levels. A 1-litre bottle of oil and some premix coolant can't hurt. You've got a spare (IIRC), so leave the tyre-weld at home to save weight *tongue* *wink*

Tomorrow, on the trip to Emerald with my 40-mile-since-last-rebuild engine, I'm taking my complete 150-piece Halfrauds-Pro socket-set and one of my toolchests complete with yet more spanners, pliers, you name it, I've probably got it. With the spare oil, water and coolant (plus all the cr*p) left in the passenger cockpit), I've probably got the weight of a chunky passenger in emergency items.

Delbert,

Halfrauds do quite a good 'motorist' tool kit. Its about £20 and the size of a thick A5 binder (ish, ok about A4.5). It has pretty much what Myles described a few other thingies. I've got one in my boot for emergencies... I've also included a bag of zip ties as they can always come in handy in the hotel bedroom if not in the car... *tongue* *tongue* *tongue*

YOu could always send Delberta on a traniee mechanics course?

Delbert, either buy the Halfrauds thing which is reasonable quality and pretty useful, or assemble a kit à la Dave 21p. Spanner sizes I carry are:

Imp: 1/2 and 9/16. 11mm fits 7/16ths.

Met - 8, 10,11, 13, 14, 17 and an adjustable. 13 is optional because a 1/2 will fit. I also have a cheap socket set and a selection of screwdrivers. Tape, ties, torch, bit of wire, pliers, wire cutters, all in a small box cable tied where the heater would be if I had one. This is enough for most running repairs. Add bits to taste (Tarragon, say.)

Now for the hard bit - try to use your best tools instead of this impromptu kit for your maintenance sessions!
