Andy W
I have a type 9 gearbox. 2 years old 4000 miles and a failing 3rd gear syncro. The problem has risen form caterham not being able to suggest the correct lubricant. I have now lowered the grade of lubricant to the correct GL4 grade. The syncro is still faulty. I have not rebuilt one of these boxes. What tools do I need and does anyone have any technical information? Is there any reason I should get a so called expert to do the job? Thanks for any advise. oilyhands
A good friend has the type '9'/'N' gearbox rebuild section from the haynes manual in .PDF format, its available for download, if you email me directly I'll point you to the URL. cdg
If it's a standard Sierra Type9 I would seriously consider getting a good used one from a specialist breaker. They are so cheap (£25-£50) that it really isn't worth the expense of a rebuild. Ford made these gearboxes by the million! Chris.
tony isherwood
If you are having to have the gearbox rebuild, I would suggest that you investigate having it re ratioed. higher 1st - lower 5th. and stronger bulk rings /synchro rings put in @ the same time. I had my box rebuilt by BGH in Kent (others advertise in Low Flying). Best 400 squids worth I ever spent on the car. (this included a sensible filler / dipstick @ the top of the box and a drain plug @ the bottom. So none of the sodding about trying to refill / change oil @ a later date. My car is a 1400SS, and the re ratios have made a diference, higher cc cars it might not be so noticable. TonyIsh
tony isherwood
Meant to add that http://hometown.aol.com/DVAndrews/index.htm http://hometown.aol.com/DVAndrews/bghpage.htm are worth a look re ratios ect. Usual disclaimer, no relation just a happy customer. TonyIsh
Blatman
I would concur with Tony Ish..... Long first and shorter fifth are superb, even on my higher capacity (2.0L) car...wink.gif After re-installing the 'box, I wish I'd also had the filler/drain option too. If it ever comes out again (likely) then I will be treating myself......
