Maybe you need to reset the immobiliser as the RAC guy almost certainly disconnected the battery. You do this by pressing the arming button 4 times (wait for the click of the relay from under the dashboard between each one) then disarm.

 

You can tell that it's the immobiliser giving you grief because:

1. When you switch the ignition to ON you hear the whirr of the fuel-pump

2. When you turn the ignition to START (or press the button) the engine turns over, but never starts

Assuming this is a std. Rover immobiliser, YOU JUST PRESS UNLOCK FIVE TIMES...

 

That way, you don't have to waste valuable time moving your thumb from the arm to disarm button for the fifth keypress... *smile*

 

...and you don't need to wait between keypresses *wink*

I assume you've checked all fuses (esp. the ECU...) etc. and have done your best to trace the wiring back from the coil...?

 

Do you get all of the other usual signs of life? Fuel-pump, IACV resetting itself (that's an ECU function, so is a good sign...)

Eek! ☹️ Sorry to hear about the lack of spark. From the description of what's working, it sounds like the immobiliser and impact cut-off can be discounted.

 

Where's the lack of spark? Have you taken the HT lead off the far end of the coil and checked there or was it from a plug lead - perhaps the coil has managed to damage one of the coil or plug leads? Its probably worth checking as close to the coil as possible and working back. I'm amazed the coil melted..

 

This probably wasn't a great deal of help, but I hope you sort it soon.

Not sure what vintage your ECU is, but I have heard this one before (ignition coil burnout on an MGF). Same thing coil burns out and afterward no ignition. There were two (possible) problems with the MGF

 

1. The owner bridged the cable going between the ECU and ignition coil engine started i.e. exessive current caused by or caused poor connection (overheating)

2. The ECU ground is now suspect as he gets intermittent ignition problems.

 

Unfortunately this problem is on going so we havn't yet confirmed the ECU ground.

 

Will keep you up to date.

Hi Andy,

 

Mentioned this thread to Mick Cooke tonight and he says as everyone else has that its almost definitely the immobiliser. His immobiliser caused problems on the run to Le Mans last year and ended the day on a low loader too ☹️ Whilst the AA chap was there, he tried to reset instructions as given by CC and it showed the same symptoms as your car.

 

Came back off the trip and decided to give it another try before fitting an emerald. He was speaking to another local owner who had suffered the same starting problem, and this is the method he tried. Mick's car fired straight up *thumbup*

 

1) Disconnect the car's battery completely (both sides) for about 15 minutes.

2) Take the battery out of the key fob and press the arm button several times to completely discharge the power.

3) Reconnect the car battery and re-insert the fob battery

4) Press the arm button six times in succession before the light starts to flash to show its arming

5) After the car has armed itself, press the disarm button as normal and see if it starts up.

 

Not sure why Mick's car caused a problem in the first place as we had only stopped at the services for a break (and obviously not disconnected the battery!) but it would have saved a lot of problems if we had known then about the full disconnection of the car and fob batteries!

 

Let us know what happens

Dunno IF yer Thing has an Ignition Module.. but it sure sounds like a classic Ign Module Meltdown.

These are readily susceptible to Voltage spikes.. ie from: bad Jump start practices or trying to start the car with a connector unplugged or even serious overheat.

Easy test is to watch yr Tachometer as you crank the car.. it should 'jump' a bit as the engine turns over.. IF not.. the Ign Module (or whatever Spark ignitor circuit Rover cobbled up ) is Toasted.

But then I've yet to see a melted High Tension coil..after over 30 years of getting greasy fingers.. gotta love those Rover engineers.

car has gone to millwood on low loader this morning, after trying evrything i could possibly think of to put it right, its only money(ouch), damn annoying after fitting new r300 wheels and new tyres 20 mins before it broke down tho, cheers for the introduction by the way nick, wheels look great had plenty of time to admire them while stood next to it for five hours on thursday.
