Nick Green
Tim, In a message on the SUL thread, you said something about having programmed ECUs ?? Does that mean you did MEMS maps, or have I misunderstood ? Nick
V7 SLR
As Tim hasn't replied, I thought I would.... The MEMS is not user-programmable. In order to change the map on your car, you will need to junk the MEMS and change to an after-market ECU. AFAIK the only direct, plug-compatible replacement to the MEMS for K series engines is Emerald's M3DK.
Tim Seipel
Sorry, I replied direct to Nick via email. Anyway doesn't the DTA system plug in direct to a MEMS harness connector?
Steve J
Mmmmmmm.... ....if MEMS is not user-programmable, how the hell do Rover calibrate all their maps??? Of course it's 'user-programmable'. All control systems are user-programmable, otherwise there wouldn't be much point in having them!!!! It's just that car manufacturers are a bit twitchy about who the user is....can't have all Metro owners 'tweaking' ignition maps to run an ignition angle 5degrees advanced of the det limit just to get to the supermarket 2 minutes quicker. And also, the software required to program an ECU is usually kept in-house. I've actually wondered how these specialist tuning places manage it. And do they put the engine on a test cell and check things like detonation at high loads, spark plug durability, piston ring durability, etc, when they've managed to get another x amount of power out of an ortherwise well calibrated engine? I'd be interested to know.
V7 SLR
Are we going to get into a pedantic argument about what constitutes "user programmability"? I would have though it obvious to what I was referring. Simply an ECU which can be interrogated and/or updated by it's owner. If the owner is not allowed the access to the software to do this then it's not user programmable is it? As opposed to the Emerald M3DK which is a direct plug compatable replacement and comes complete with PC software and even the bloody cable. CHRIS CLARK
All I know is that B$%£^Y computers in cars can be a nightmare. Had a problem with poor bottom end (the car!)power. Eventually traced by myself (having changed everything else!) to a Rover Mems unit that had gone into get-you-home failsfe mode! Electronic boxes bah! Signed The Computer Luddite Society!!!!!!!!
