Delberts Wallet
How easy is this to do? I've heard that just replacing the de-dion is straight forward but I want to fit new ears while I'm at it (belt a braces etc). Is it much more involved ie undoing the hubs etc?? Paul McKenzie
Covered many times. Remove rear calipers then withdraw whole hub/drive shaft assembly. Paul
Chelspeed
You could just about replace a de dion tube with the driveshafts still in the diff and the brakes still attached to their pipes. If you do it that way then changing the ears will be a bit more work. But (and a big but) it's far easier to change the de dion tube by first removing the driveshaft, hub, bearing carrier, brake disc, caliper and ear etc from each side completely off the car. That leaves a lot more room round the de dion tube to change it. If you've done that then it's another 5 minutes job to undo the caliper and the last two bolts from the bearing carrier and fully remove the ears from the hub, bearing carrier, driveshaft, brake disc and change them before you replace them. To change the ear you don't need to undo the big nut on the outboard end of the driveshaft and the bearings can stay in the bearing carrier. A two spanner job in the Halford's difficulty scale. Myles
This might help here While I was doing this, I hung the calipers (brake tubes intact) from the suspension (dampers) with bent coat-hangers - I'd have had plenty of access to the ears if I'd wanted to remove them. Leadership Team RogNeedham Posted January 26, 2005 Leadership Team Share Posted January 26, 2005 Gareth you know where I'm coming from here - to replace the toob I just tied the whole hub, driveshat etc assembly back with strong wire, taking care where putting the new toob in. It seemed a lot more straight forward than Chelspeeds approach - whole job done in c.2.5hrs including cup of tea stops and moving the car from outside to avoid torrential downpour. having said that 'changing ears' sounds more painful so maybe the removal of the above items makes life easier Rog PS engine change delayed until this weekend 😬
