Oil breather to rocker cover on Xflow

DW

Recommended Posts

I've read the threads on changing the oil breather pipe so that instead of going from the crankcase to the catch tank, the pipe first goes to the rocker cover and then from the rocker cover to the catch tank.

I've ordered the parts as per the Roger King post (below), but not sure of the positioning that's described. Has anyone got pictures or a more specific description?

E.g. if I'm looking into the engine bay from the near-side (side ways on to the car with the carbs furthest away), the outlet from the rocker to the catch tank presumably goes on the far side off the rocker, high up. Does the inlet go somewhere near the oil filler cap? Which of the ford parts goes in which hole (one of them is 45 degree and one is 90 degree)?

Roger's post says:

"What you need to do is to machine two inlet/outlets into the rocker cover. The first one should be above the breather canister and you should feed the hose that currently goes to the catch tank to this. Then machine the second hole into the rear face of the rocker cover as high as possible and lead the hose from this to the catch tank."

"If you tap the holes machined in the rocker cover 3/8" bspt, you can use these part nos as screw in inlet/outlets - 1484835, 6148087. These are Ford part numbers and one is a straight outlet and the other is a 45 degree outlet. Both will screw into the rocker cover and then the hose simply pushes onto the them with a jubilee clip."

Rogers description is spot on. The breather sits in the block below the carbs. I cut the first hole on the carb side of the rocker cover, at about the midway point front to back. Make sure that you cut into the flat part of the rocker box, not on a radius, and make sure that there is enough room to site the elbow and the pipe without fouling the carbs. I used a 90deg bend at this point, taking the hose towards the rear of the car and then around the end of the manifold and down to the breather. This keeps it clear of the carbs etc.

The second hole was cut on the rear face of the rocker cover (again try to do it on the flat surface rather than on a radius). It depends where you site your catch tank as to which angle of pipe you use, but there is sufficient room at the back to get away with a straight or angled joint. You then route the pipe to the tank by the easiest route.

Hope this helps
