Rim size - what does the suffix mean?

Sorry if this sounds like a numpty question.

I've been investigating new tyres and suitable wheels. I keep seeing various rim sizes quoted along the lines of 5B, 6J & 8J etc. I understand the numerical part to be the width of the rim in inches but don't understand what the suffix alpha to mean. What is the difference between a 6B rim and a 6J rim? My current wheels are 6JJ and not listed as suitable for the tyres I am thinking off. Is suffix something to take into account when choosing wheels & tyres.

If anyone can point me at a webpage that explains it would be very useful. Done a google search but couldn't find anything.

Thanks for the pointers guys some very useful info. Now I know the suffix relates to the bead profile. Just trying to find out now how "J" differs from "JJ" and if it is OK to put "J" tyres on "JJ". I assume it will be as these wheels plus a set of A032 where bought as a package by the previous owner through a well respected Caterham service agent.
