Just thinking about this...........our freezer has all sorts of alarms on it for temp etc but what you really need is a great big siren to go off when the power cuts......it would need some kind of emergency battery pack to power said siren........seems sensible and doable especially on a chest freezer so why don`t they have them?

Nah, what you want to do (and I've forgotten precisely how to do it...) is to set up a large transformer thing and some light-bulbs (or whatever - but bulbs are traditional). The transformer gets powered by the fridge and consumes b*gger all power and is connected to the bulbs (which do...). When the power goes off, the electro-magnetic field dies and generates 'back EMF' - sufficient to blow the bulbs in a fairly spectacular way.

If Hoopy wasn't mooning around with women, he'd probably remember the details *wink*
