John Hughes
Help It's 15yr since I last checked / adjusted the tappets on a x-flow and I'm waiting for a Haynes manual to arrive. Could somebody tell me the order of which one to check when it's corresponding one is fully open In anticipation John Hughes
oilyhands
You can adjust according to the 'rocking' method Valves rocking Adjust 7 & 8 1 & 2 5 & 6 3 & 4 1 & 2 7 & 8 3 & 4 6 & 5 That is when valves 7 & 8 are in the partially open position and are passing one another (one closing the other opening), then adjust the valve clearances shown. Or you can use the rule of 9, when number 1 valve is fully open, adjust (9 - 1) valve clearance number 8. When 3 is fully open adjust (9 - 3) valve number 6 etc.etc. Or you can use the mirror method, imagine a mirror down the centre of the head perpedicular to the rocker shaft. Whenever a valve is fully open, adjust it's mirror opposite. All these methods are fine, remember to adjust when cold. Oily

STEVE GILBERT
And John, for super quiet Tappets, slip in the feeler guage on the valve your adjusting and move the crank and hence camshaft around a few deg so you find the limit of its lift and then re adjust. If you just look at it and say, yeah looks open, you will never get it exact. Takes aprox twice as long but well worth it for quiet running
ashaughnessy
This isn't an answer to the question, but in eleven years of ownership I've never had to adjust the rocker/valve clearances on my supersprint. Is this a record?
