ashaughnessy
On my crossflow alternator, there are three wires - two thick brown ones and one thin brown/yellow one. Does it matter which way I connect the two thick brown ones to the alternator? The wiring diagram shows one of them connects to the battery, the other to the fuse box. Presumably, they're both live feeds and one feeds the battery and the other feeds the car, so there's no difference between the two terminals on the alternator. I'm just guessing here, though. I suppose I could trace each connection and see where it ends up, but that seems like hard work, especially as I don't have a working multimeter, and I still wouldn't be certain which alternator terminal was which. Big Brother
A, If your alternator is the same as mine (LAR100) then both of the "big" terminals are joined together just inside the black plastic case. You should "just" be able to see this with a torch if you can get at the right angle. Basicaly connect the big wires to the big terminals - either way round For your info the Brown/Yellow wire runs to the ignition light on the dash. The other side of this light connects to a switched (ignition) supply. When the alternator is not turning it will connect the lamp to ground - ignition light on. When the alternator is spinning and generating a voltage the light will have 12v on either side and will extinguish. hope this helps Steve cool.gifScream...if you want to go faster!!!id=limegreen> cool.gif
stevefoster
Sounds like my alternator but mine is on a HPC. It does not matter which way round on mine.
adey
Indeed it doesn't matter, they are electrically the same, the only reason for having two wires is to spread the current load when the alternator is working hard.
EFA
Or, one is charge to the battery, one is supply direct to the rest of the loom. All the same , the order of the two thick ones makes no difference.
