Ian7
Hi All If one wanted to bond an aluminum or steel sheet metal bracket to (an already finished) carbon fibre structure, what would you recommend as a bonding agent? Various 3M and silicon-sealant-type products haven't worked, JB Weld worked but only for a few hours of vibration before falling off also. Looking for more strength than double-sided tape, by the way. Thanks.
PaulD
You should consider using an epoxy. One of the best arround is 3M 9323, very good up to about 80 C. I am not sure how easy it is to find in small quantities. Surface prep is very important. For CF, this means lightly abrading and de-greasing. for the aluminium, you could consider an etch primer, but it probably isn't nescesary. There is a surface prep guide here Paul Edited by - PaulD on 12 Dec 2004 08:30:
Frying Pan
Reverie have an epoxy on their site - bottom of this page here - Scotchweld DP490 which might be worth a look as well... Guy See some pictures of the build here. 4000 miles completed!
moosetestbestanden
Consider Araldite 2015. It's used specifically for bonding metals to CF in the aircraft industry and also for bicycles (!). There are a number of formulas available. This UK supplier may have some: here It's tough as nails and pretty easy to use. Sets up hard as concrete in about 6 hrs. I have waaay too much so if you'd like a little Xmas present just send a private message w/ your address to moosetestbestanden on: http://www.californiacaterhamclub.com Happy holidays! Foxy Smith
Been researching this subject myself. As above specialised epoxy resin looks best. Most important esp with aluminium is rapid prep of the bonding surface to remove oxide layer, use stainless steel "toothbrush" or rotary brush in drill. DO NOT USE A STEEL BRUSH. Having done this immediately apply resin to prepped surface this will cut down the formation of AlOX which is one of the things that interferes with a good bond. There are chemical means of prepping the aluminium surface but generally invole nasty acids and are not recommended for home use.
millsn
Good results with Plexus MA310 so far. Needs a gun ideally although you can do without. Nigel Mills - 2.0 Zetec TB's + cams. I like my engine
