coopertrooper2001
Hi there, when I come off the accelerator or when I made a bit of a jurky gear change (now adjusted the clutch position) I get a clonking noise, sounds kinda like a loose exhaust or the engine rocking too much but really not sure. Any common things that can cause this? Loose tie bar? help.

Sid
Sounds like the bush to me too. What is the part number for the A-frame bush for a live-axle XFlow? Is it Y16? Cheers, Sid

wonkey eyed barmaid
if the x-flow chassis is the same as a vx live axle, then yes the a-frame bush is Quinton Hazell Y16

coopertrooper2001
thanks for the replies chaps, new to the Caterham game. Car has done 5k miles and when I chatted to the Caterham salesman and asked about A frame bushes he told me they are very reliable, I asked the question after reading about them on here. Confused.........

Mark Gregory
Mark: If you get 1k miles from your A-frame bushes you're simply not trying hard enough! I change mine every 100 miles, but then that's under race conditions.....
Stuart Faulds
Erm, where did we establish this was a live axle car? If it's dedion, then the bushes *are* very reliable, but there tends to be a fair bit of noise from the diff when backing off.
Sootysevener
Hi Coopertrooper If your car is a Live axle then the CC metalastic bushes will only last between 300/1000 road miles depending how hard you drive - regardless of what CC tell you - the issue is that the rubber deteriorates when contacted by grease or oil and back axles are rarely absoluteley oil tight and dry externally. If your car is de dion axle then bushes will not come under the same lateral strain as the live axle and should last a lot longer. The use of polybushes rather than metalastic will improve durability but also stffen up the back end and this can impact on handling making a live axle marginally more back end twitchy. Changing the rear A frame bush is a 20 minute job and no big deal in the spanners department David 1989 1700XF SS with upgraditis

Ben Long
Might be worth checking the engine mounts are secure too. I had a similar problem with one of my previous Caterhams, and it turned out to be the exhaust pipe contacting the chassis due to a missing bolt on the engine mount - going into the block This was replaced and all were tightened, which then lifted the engine/exhaust off the chassis tube by about 4mm Meant I had to do an oil change at the same time though, as this got in the way of tightening the bolts.
