stephen grant
I have a small amount of play between my removable steering wheel and the column, in the plane down the column (ie towards me/away from me). Should I be worried? thanks, stephen Edited by - stephen grant on 29 Nov 2004 16:28:53 Edited by - stephen grant on 29 Nov 2004 16:32:
Support Team Shaun_E Posted November 29, 2004 Support Team Share Posted November 29, 2004 Not wanting to teach you how to suck eggs but... have you got the wheel all the way on? The Momo has a position where it's not on properly but also doesn't come off - you wouldn't be the first person to have driven around in this state 😳. If this is not the case then perhaps you do have a problem. Yellow SL #
stephen grant
Hmmm.... I'll go home and check, but I thought I was sure that it was on all the way. It's not a lot of play, but then again, it's really not an area of the car where one's happy to have anything loose! thanks, stephen ps; don't worry about teaching me to suck eggs - i'm bl00dy clueless with all this DIY 7 stuff. Keen to learn though.....
andy couchman
Do check, but I think you'll find 'they all do that sir'. You could wrap some plumbers' white tape stuff round the column in order to minimise the gap. Andy
V7 SLR
Mine's totally secure in the fore/aft plane WHEN it's properly attached (as Shaun says).
Allen Payne
Make sure that the clamps in the steering column are tight
Grubbster
Mine is fine fore and aft but there is a little side to side play. Roadsport build photo's here Le Mans 2004 photo's here
Ferrino
Which QR bosses do you guys 'with play' have? I am tempted to buy a Lifeline QR boss (the one currently supplied by CC). I recall reading that the Spa ones are very reliable. Lobbying Caterham for a new badge....
stephen grant
ok, well had a proper play last night and, actually, having thought that the play was in/out, it's actually side/side. if I put the wheel on the column and then apply pressure to the left side of the wheel and then the right side, it rocks a little. Sounds like Grubbster's situation as well. Guess it's nothing to worry about??? stephen
Jason Plato
all the QR mounts I have felt and owned have had this play in them to one degree or another . - I changed to a fixed, flat bottomed D shaped wheel in the end ... if you have any concerns that you may have defective steering or play then you should take it to somone who knows what they are dealing with . Not being nasty or harsh , but it is the bit that keeps you on the road ! Normans_Ghost
Just to be safe check the sliding joint. I have seen several cars where these are not tightened correctly and will "rock". Souldn't be felt as sideways movement at the wheel but a clicking sound. Norman Verona, 1989 BDR 220bhp, Mem No 2166, the full story here
stephen grant
Thanks Dave - definately no offense taken, I couldn't agree with you more! To be fair, the first thing I did when I got the car was give it to James Whiting for a few days, for precisely that reason, and he didn't mention a problem with the steering, but I definately agree that you can't be too careful with this sort of thing. Norman - I definately don't get any clicking sounds. Could you explain what you mean by "sliding joint"? Do you mean the sliding collar on the wheel itself? From the comments here though, it's starting to sound a bit like a TADTS, but I want to be sure. stephen
