No 57
Hi all I fitted my engine and gearbox last night (rover, academy car) I was going to buy some oil for it so I could fire it up tonight but cleverly forgot to bring the handbook to work. Does anyone know what the reccomended oil for running is is. I seem to reemmber someone mentioning mineral oil rather than a fully synth, but I can't remember grade etc Cheers Ben

martinwhitcher
any cheap 10w/40 i used vauxhall mineral about £11 for 10 litres. any halfords semi 10/40w would be ok for the first 500miles Martin MW 51 CAT Superlight No.171 now know as:Superlight DVA
Sheds Moderator
ANy cheap and cheerful 10w40 or 5w40 or 15w40 mineral oil, say around a tenner a gallon, should do it. Halfords own brand/Comma/GTX/Duckhams etc. Avoid the 3 quid supermarket stuff. Throw it away after 1000 miles and put decent stuff in.
Beelzebub
I'll be running in soon. Can the mineral oil be drained & then directly replaced with fully synth 🤔 I'm thinking back to the old days when mixing Castrol R & mineral was a definite no-no. What's the scoop. Peter MarieEa
Davesport You've got a good memory about not mixing bean and mineral oil. All currently available synthetic oils are mixable with mineral oil. Peter M. Quick7
Bare
Dunno.. Wasn't too long ago that Engines were routinely "run in ' on Non- detergent Single weight Oils. If it's an Xflow I suspect the 'older' regimine still applies. I'd check with some competent Rebuilders Before trying anything.. foresight/prevention and all of that. surely worth waiting for a definitive answer ;-)
oilman
Normally recommend a heavier weight mineral oil like 15w-50. Cheers Simon
