3-rail 4speed Ford Gearbox

Recently broke the 3rd and 4th baulk rings in a 3-rail ford gearbox and would like to have some feed back on any experience with these gearboxes. After strip-down we have found that the gearbox has 'earlier' baulk rings and syncro hubs and we are wondering if the 'later' baulk rings are stronger. Also if anyone has experience of using steel baulk rings in this gearbox. I have spoken to SPC but they don't make steel rings for the 3-rail.I have heard of horror stories of steel baulk rings seizing onto the gear, has anyone experience of this?

Burton's catalogue lists steel baulk rings for 1st/2nd and 3rd/4th for the three rail gearbox. I don't know the manufacturer but the price doesn't seem too bad.

I have suffered baulk ring failure in Lotus Cortinas and Escort Mexicos.

Is your box a 2832E (2000E) ?

If so, the later rings are a little stronger as the cutouts for the blocker bars don't go right through the ring. A very small improvement so not really worth the effort.

I've used Quaife steel rings for the last 6 years on a Type 9 box & had no problems, despite similar warnings about them jamming on the cones. They do benefit from lapping-in with valve grinding paste before fitting and at each rebuild. I guess it all depends on how rough you are with your changes.
