timbo
I've 3.7K on the 6 speed (2004) .... still not happy with 2nd gear selection both up and down the box. I have to miss 2nd altogether when cold as it simply refuses to select. Once box is warm I still can't get an easy 2nd gear... it's as if the synchro mesh is bucked.... it just doesn't click into gear with the light palm pressure like the other gears. You've got to physically pull it in. As you pull it into the gear you can feel through the gearstick a lack of 'meshing' as it finally seats home. Does anyone else have similar problems. If so what was your action? Emerald Isle's 1st SV 148lbft @ 6091rpm and 182bhp @ 6900rpm of cheese power
simonbell
While you were worrying about 2nd gear we`ve just had a fantastic blat round the north coast 😬 Simon Bell - Caterham 7 Duratec R I`ve seen the future.....and it`s powered by duratec
Rob Walker
Sounds like you have the wrong oil in the box. You need a GL4 lubricant the popular choice is Redline MTL. Too slippy an oil and the syncro rings won`t grip resulting in difficulty selecting gears 2nd seems to be the worst.
alicat
Tim Mine was like that at 3K miles, it has gradually improved. As the others have said the oil makes a difference. Alicat
timbo
been through all the oils: Redline MTL - no better Coma from Caterham - still the same EP80-90 - better when cold - still notchy Emerald Isle's 1st SV 148lbft @ 6091rpm and 182bhp @ 6900rpm of cheese power
Rob Walker
If you have tried the oil then it sounds like you have a duff syncro ring on 2nd. I would seek the advice of Phil Stewart of R&R 01959 525105.
Dave Barrow
Redline MTl sorted th2 2 6 speeds I've had brilliant;y a very noticeable difference and 2nd gear was a problem on both but no longer. If as others have stated it has not helped then R&R is the best next step.
Richard J Darnell
I had the same problem from new but it is less noticiable now after about 5k miles - it is now only a problem for first few changes when the oil is stone cold. I also have the "noisy 4th gear" others have mentioned ☹️
timbo
I'll strip the box out some night this week and check 2nd gear, synchro and rings for discolouration etc. If I need parts were's best to look? old captain slow
36k miles and it's now not a problem, but was as described when new. C7 CDW
Rob Walker
Phil Stewart will only charge you £75 labour to strip, clean and rebuild the box. if it needs a syncro they are about £30 again Phil can supply or CC Parts. As the syncros are brass on the 6 speed I doub`t you will see any discolouration. What you should be looking for is wear or damage.
